Pep rallies, rivalries, and championships: the games and athletes that made Chapel Hill a sports town.

In briefChapel Hill became a sports town through the university: the 1957 and 1982 basketball championships, the women’s soccer dynasty from 1981, the 1994 women’s basketball title, and the rivalries and pep rallies around them. Hillsborough had its own arena in the Occoneechee Speedway, a stock-car track from 1947 to 1968.

Chapters follow the program from the game's arrival on campus and the 'White Phantoms' of the Southern Conference through the founding of the ACC, the 1957 season, Dean Smith's changes to the game and the title seasons of 1982, 1993, 2005 and 2009, closing with a century of statistics. 289 pages.

Will Blythe's account of the Duke and North Carolina basketball rivalry, described in its subtitle as thoroughly obsessive, intermittently uplifting and occasionally unbiased. Blythe writes as a Chapel Hill partisan, and the book treats sports rivalries, basketball fans and the social side of the game in North Carolina. Published by HarperCollins in New York in 2006, first edition, 357 pages.

Art Chansky's 2009 history of the Carolina basketball dynasty that three coaches, Frank McGuire and Dean Smith among them, built at the University of North Carolina. Smith wrote the foreword and Rick Brewer the introduction. Chapters cover Final Fours, the Larry Brown bond, recruiting and the program's records.

The Legends Club

John Feinstein's account of the three coaches who defined Triangle college basketball in the 1980s: Dean Smith (1931-2015) at North Carolina, Mike Krzyzewski at Duke and Jim Valvano (1946-1993) at N.C. State, all working within a few miles of one another. Feinstein follows the recruiting contests, the rivalry among the three programs and the personal competition among the three men, which was not always friendly, and the pressure that came with national attention. Published by Doubleday in 2016, 404 pages with plates.

    Edward P. Sanseverino's 1995 account of the Occoneechee-Orange Speedway, the stock car track outside Hillsborough that ran in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Topics include automobile racing and racetracks in North Carolina and Hillsborough in the twentieth century.

The Navy Pre-Flight School at Chapel Hill, 1942–1945May 1942–October 1945 · 10 events · Commissioned at UNC in May 1942, the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School trained 18,700 cadets before it was decommissioned on October 15, 1945. Cadets ate in Lenoir Hall and drilled in a Navy-built armory that opened in 1943. George H. W. Bush trained there as a cadet, Gerald Ford taught there, and Ted Williams played on its baseball team.

  1. Faculty turns away a fencing and boxing instructor

    Law, policy or court · Chapel Hill

    A Major Roberts, backed by letters from leading trustees, asked to teach the students athletics including fencing and boxing. The faculty refused to let him form a class after learning he advertised teaching the bowie knife at the University of Virginia and boasted of having been a London prize fighter.

  2. The university track team wins the Southern championship at New Orleans

    Competition or sporting achievement · Chapel Hill

    Running on a cinder track given by student Henry S. Lake, a university track team competed at New Orleans against Vanderbilt, Tulane and Texas and won the Southern championship.

  3. Hillsboro's first public schoolhouse is gone and its lot is set aside for an athletic field

    Closing or ending · West Tryon Street, Hillsborough

    Once the new consolidated school opened, the grounds where the old Hillsboro schoolhouse had stood were to become the new school's athletic field, according to a February 1923 report.

  4. Carl Snavely returns to coach UNC football

    Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill

    Snavely came back to Chapel Hill in 1945 after being assured that his program would have the full support of the administration. His 1946 to 1949 teams, built around Charlie Justice and returning servicemen, won two Southern Conference championships and played in three bowl games.

  5. Frank McGuire arrives at UNC to coach basketball

    Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill

    McGuire came to Chapel Hill in 1952 to take over a basketball program that ranked far behind football in the university's priorities. His first office at Carolina was the ticket booth at Woollen Gym.

  6. UNC men’s basketball wins the 1957 NCAA national championship

    Competition or sporting achievement · Chapel Hill

    UNC defeated Kansas, 54–53 in triple overtime, to win the national title.

  7. Jim Tatum dies at Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill

    Life event · Chapel Hill

    Tatum apparently contracted an overwhelming viral infection while visiting Canada with the coaches Peahead Walker and Frank Howard, and died one week after entering Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.

  8. Woody Durham calls Carolina football and basketball on the radio

    Publication, speech or performance · Chapel Hill

    Durham, a 1963 UNC graduate, was the radio play-by-play voice of Tar Heel football and men's basketball for 40 years, calling more than 1,800 broadcasts.

  9. UNC men’s basketball wins the 1982 NCAA national championship

    Competition or sporting achievement · Chapel Hill

    UNC defeated Georgetown, 63–62, to win the national title.

    Award or honor · Chapel Hill

    Carolina won the Sears Directors' Cup for its all-sports record under athletics director John Swofford, the only ACC program to win the award.

  12. UNC women’s basketball wins the 1994 NCAA national championship

    Competition or sporting achievement · Chapel Hill

    Charlotte Smith’s last-second three-pointer gave UNC a 60–59 victory over Louisiana Tech.

  13. Occoneechee Speedway is listed in the National Register

    Naming or commemoration · Hillsborough

    The 44-acre Occoneechee Speedway site near Hillsborough, acquired by preservationists from the France and Staley families in 1997, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2002. It is the only surviving dirt track from NASCAR's inaugural 1949 season.

  14. UNC discloses possible academic misconduct in its football program

    Law, policy or court · Chapel Hill

    An NCAA and university inquiry into agent benefits to football players, set off by a player's tweet on May 31, 2010, turned up possible academic misconduct by a tutor, which Thorp announced at a press conference. Later investigation found grade changes and classes that did not meet in the African and Afro-American studies department.
