McGuire's undefeated Tar Heels play their home games at Woollen Gym McGuire's 1956-57 team won 32 straight games and the national championship, beating Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain in triple overtime as 12-point underdogs. Only eight of those wins came at home in Woollen Gym, where a hole was drilled in the wall for a television camera lens. Franklin Street crowd turns violent after UNC loses the NCAA basketball final After Indiana beat UNC 63-50 for the national title, a crowd Police Chief Herman Stone put at 20,000 to 25,000 filled Franklin Street; police counted 25 to 30 serious fights, fireworks set off among the people and a shooting near Pittsboro Street and West Cameron Avenue that wounded two men. Stone called it the largest and the most unruly crowd he had seen downtown, unlike the street party after the semifinal win on March 28, which ended with no arrests. Tens of thousands fill Franklin Street to celebrate UNC's NCAA basketball championship After UNC beat Georgetown 63-62 in New Orleans on the night of March 29, 1982, more than 25,000 people poured onto Franklin Street to celebrate, painting the street and themselves Carolina blue while nearly 100 police tried to keep order; Police Chief Herman Stone later put the crowd at 35,000 to 40,000 and the property damage at about $6,000. Part of the crowd overran Fowler's Food Store, which closed until noon the next day, and North Carolina Memorial Hospital treated 26 people, the worst a student with a broken leg. About 20,000 fans celebrate UNC's NCAA basketball title on Franklin Street After UNC beat Michigan 77-71 for the national championship, an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 people filled Franklin Street that night; some threw paint on storefronts and bottles into the crowd and pulled down trees, and 130 police officers with help from other agencies watched over the crowd.
