Karen Shelton coached field hockey at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for 42 seasons, from 1981 until she announced her retirement in December 2022, winning 745 games and a record 10 NCAA championships. The Tar Heels moved into Karen Shelton Stadium, named for her, before the 2018 season.

Shelton took over the Tar Heel program in 1981, after finishing at West Chester State in 1979 and spending a year as an assistant coach at Franklin and Marshall. She coached at Chapel Hill for 42 seasons and had 40 winning ones.

The university gave Shelton its C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award for her long service to Carolina. She had been inducted into the campus honor society the Order of the Golden Fleece in March 2002.
The university announced that its field hockey facility would be called Karen Shelton Stadium, the first UNC playing field named in honor of a woman. The team had moved in at the start of preseason that August, and the stadium holds about 1,000 spectators.
