    Biographical study of the playwright Paul Green by Agatha Boyd Adams, edited by Richard Walser and issued by the university library in 1951 in its Library Extension Publication series. Topics include his drama at Chapel Hill and his writing on slavery. A slim book of 116 pages with a portrait.

In the chronology

  1. English Record Commission sends its publications to the university library Between 1833 and 1841 the British government's Record Commission gave the university 83 folio and 24 octavo volumes, among them a printing of the Domesday Book, with twelve books and many pamphlets by its secretary, Charles Parton Cooper.
  2. Senior tutor becomes the university's librarian Until 1838 the faculty chose a librarian every half year; after that the senior tutor held the office, and in 1838 Tutor William H. Owen, librarian since 1836, was voted a salary of $100 a year. Owen had counted about 1,900 books in the library in December 1836.
  3. Smith Hall is built to Alexander Jackson Davis's design as the university library and ballroom The New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis designed Smith Hall, built from 1850 to 1852 for just over $10,300 and named for the trustee and former governor Benjamin Smith. It served as library and ballroom and is now the Playmakers Theatre. People: Benjamin Smith
  4. University library moved from South Building to Smith Hall The university's books were taken from the president's lecture room in South Building to the new Smith Hall, and Hubbard, Charles Phillips and the librarian were told to prepare a catalogue.   5. The literary societies merge their libraries with the university's The Philanthropic Society voted almost unanimously and the Dialectic 42 to 30 to join their books to the university library in Smith Hall, to be called the Library of the University of North Carolina endowed by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies and opened every weekday. Borrowing rose from 3,657 books in 1885-86 to 4,761 the next year. People: George Tayloe Winston, James Lee Love
  6. Ralph H. Graves serves as University Librarian After graduating from the university in 1897, Ralph H. Graves served as University Librarian at Chapel Hill until he left for New York in 1899. He took his master's degree there in 1898.
  7. Edward Kidder Graham returns to Chapel Hill to manage the library After a year teaching at a Charlotte private school, Graham came back at Alderman's request to run the university library, and before the year was out Alderman made him an instructor in English at $700 a year.   8. John Sprunt Hill endows the North Carolina Collection John Sprunt Hill gave the university library money for collecting historical and literary material about North Carolina, the start of what became the North Carolina Collection.
  9. Masons lay the cornerstone of the Carnegie library On the Saturday of the 1907 commencement the Grand Lodge of Masons, led by Grand Master Francis D. Winston, laid the cornerstone of the new library built with Andrew Carnegie's gift. Construction had begun in October 1906. People: M. C. S. Noble
  10. UNC's Carnegie Library opens UNC's new library, built with a gift from Andrew Carnegie first offered in 1905 as $50,000 and later raised to $55,000, was finished in the summer of 1907 and opened to students that fall once its furniture arrived. It served as the main library until Wilson Library opened in 1929 and was renamed for John Sprunt Hill in 1931. People: Andrew Carnegie
  11. Cornelia Spencer Love works as a librarian at the University of North Carolina Love came to Chapel Hill and worked in the university library from 1917 to 1948. She later wrote When Chapel Hill Was a Village, published in 1976.
  12. Mary Lindsay Thornton becomes librarian of the North Carolina Collection Fresh out of library school, Mary Lindsay Thornton took charge of the university's North Carolina Collection, then about 1,500 items kept in a small upstairs corner room of the library building that later became Hill Music Hall. She led it for forty years.
  13. Fire destroys three fraternity houses on Fraternity Row and nearly takes the Carnegie Library Fire broke out about 2 a.m. and destroyed the Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Phi and Sigma Nu houses at the lower end of Fraternity Row, a private lane behind the Carnegie Library. The library, about thirty feet from the Sigma Nu house, lost only some window panes and had water damage. The university then bought land across South Columbia Street and swapped it with the fraternities for their old lots, which led to the fraternity courts of the 1920s.
  14. Elizabeth Janet Gray joins the UNC library staff Elizabeth Janet Gray, later Elizabeth Gray Vining, came to Chapel Hill in 1926 as an assistant cataloger at the University library, after library school at Drexel. Friends in town knew her as Betty Gray.
  15. Hamilton announces plans for a manuscript collection at UNC Hamilton announced plans for what he first called the National Southern Collection of manuscripts at the university. It became the Southern Historical Collection after Sarah Graham Kenan's gift in 1930.
  16. The legislature allows $625,000 for a new university library Plans had called for a library costing as much as $862,000. After Chase's pleading, the 1927 General Assembly provided $625,000, just over half of all the capital money for the campus. Robert B. House kept the project on schedule with the Advisory Budget Commission while Chase was abroad. People: Harry Woodburn Chase, R. B. House
  17. Howard Mumford Jones opens the Bull's Head Bookshop in Murphey Hall English professor Howard Mumford Jones announced the Bull's Head Book Store, a non-profit shop for modern novels and short stories in his office at 214 Murphey Hall. It later moved to the YMCA building, the ground floor of the university library and, in 1968, the Daniels Building.
  18. UNC library worker Elizabeth Janet Gray sells her first book Gray, a member of the University library staff, signed a contract with Doubleday, Page & Co. for Meredith's Ann, a story for girls set in the New Hampshire mountains. She went on to write several more books while living in Chapel Hill.
  19. The new University Library, later Wilson Library, is dedicated UNC dedicated its new University Library, designed by Arthur Cleveland Nash, on October 19, 1929, weeks after students began using the building that fall. The Southern Historical Collection is established In 1930 Sarah Graham Kenan of Wilmington gave UNC $25,000 to buy books, letters and diaries for the Southern Historical Collection being gathered by history professor J. The old Carnegie Library is dedicated as the music building After the library moved to its new building, the Carnegie Library was remodeled for the music department with an auditorium and a Reuter organ, most of the cost given by the Hill family. It was dedicated on November 14, 1930, and named Hill Music Hall by trustee resolution in the summer of 1931.
  23. The Hill family gives the Carolina Inn to the university John Sprunt Hill and his family gave the Carolina Inn, which he had built in 1924, to the university on the condition that its income support the North Carolina Collection.
  24. Hope Summerell Chamberlain talks about Old Days in Chapel Hill at the Bull's Head Bookshop The Bull's Head Bookshop on the ground floor of the University Library announced a Tuesday afternoon talk by Chamberlain about her book, with autographed copies on sale for $1.35.
  25. James Welch Patton becomes director of the Southern Historical Collection Patton succeeded J. G. de Roulhac Hamilton as director of the Southern Historical Collection at the UNC library and taught a North Carolina history course each year while he held the post. People: J. Howard Mumford Jones gives the address at the dedication of the university library addition Howard Mumford Jones, a former member of the university's English faculty then at Harvard, gave the principal address, on the library in higher education, at the dedication of the $1.6 million addition to the university library, held in Memorial Hall.   27. Jerrold Orne is appointed University Librarian Chancellor Robert B. House announced Orne's appointment as university librarian, effective August 1, with the approval of President William C.   29. Isaac M. Taylor serves as dean of the UNC School of Medicine Taylor succeeded W. Reece Berryhill as dean in 1964. Student enrollment, faculty and research funding grew during his deanship, and a ten-year capital building program began that produced Berryhill Hall, the first phase of the Health Sciences Library, and the Brinkhous-Bullitt and Burnett-Womack Buildings. Isaac Copeland directs the Southern Historical Collection Copeland served as chief of the UNC library's Manuscripts Department and director of the Southern Historical Collection from 1967 to 1975, between James Welch Patton and Carolyn A.   31. The undergraduate library named for R. B. House opens The building put up in 1964 was occupied by the university in 1968 as the Robert B. House Undergraduate Library, named for the former chancellor.
  32. Powell moves from the North Carolina Collection to the history faculty Powell left the North Carolina Collection to teach North Carolina history on the UNC faculty, where he stayed until 1986 and taught more than 6,000 students.
  33. H. G. Jones becomes curator of the North Carolina Collection Jones succeeded William S. Powell as curator of UNC's North Carolina Collection and adjunct professor of history. He held the curatorship until he retired in 1994. People: William S. Powell

  37. The North Carolina Collection Gallery opens in Wilson Library A gallery conceived by North Carolina Collection curator H. G. Jones opened in the east wing of Wilson Library, with R. Neil Fulghum as its first keeper, to exhibit items the library had collected.
  38. Sounds of the South conference marks the opening of UNC's Southern Folklife Collection More than 300 collectors, folklorists, musicians and archivists met at UNC-Chapel Hill for the official opening of the Southern Folklife Collection with the John Edwards Memorial Collection.   39. Randall Kenan returns to UNC as a visiting professor Kenan, who decided on a writing career in UNC English classes, came back to Chapel Hill in 1995 as a visiting professor, and read that February in the Second Sunday series at Wilson Library.

Andy Griffith gives his career memorabilia to Wilson Library Griffith donated his collection of career memorabilia, including a guitar, to the Southern Historical Collection at Wilson Library, the same year he was among the first three recipients of the Carolina Performing Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.
  41. UNC Libraries opens the exhibit Slavery and the Making of the University University archivists mounted an exhibit on the enslaved and free Black people who built and served the early university, including cabinetmaker Thomas Day and poet George Moses Horton. People: George Moses Horton

UNC's library exhibited Rogers Road family histories drawn from Emily Eidenier Pearce's book The exhibit We're All Family Here: Preserving Community Heritage in the Rogers Road Neighborhood of Chapel Hill introduced families who had shaped the area from the 1700s on. It was inspired by Pearce's 2009 history Rogers Road, which RENA presents as part of its History Project.

Smithies and Sancar give replica Nobel medals to UNC At a Davis Library gathering, Oliver Smithies and Aziz Sancar presented gold-plated bronze replicas of their Nobel Prize medals to the university. John Blackfeather Jeffries gives his Occaneechi collection to UNC's Southern Historical Collection Jeffries gave the Wilson Library about 5,000 items, including photographs of Occaneechi powwows and of the replica village's construction in Hillsborough, recordings of Occaneechi, Saponi and Tutelo songs, and the band's petition for state acknowledgment of tribal status.
  45. UNC Libraries endows the Jacquelyn Dowd Hall Fellowship An endowment from John Powell created a UNC University Libraries fellowship in Hall's name for graduate students researching the American South, with preference for projects using oral history sources.
