Dean Smith

Dean Smith coached UNC men's basketball in Chapel Hill for 35 years, winning 879 games and two NCAA championships. In 1959, as an assistant coach, he joined his pastor Robert Seymour in taking a Black theology student to dinner at The Pines restaurant to integrate it, and he later recruited Charlie Scott, the first African American scholarship athlete at UNC.
