Willie Scroggs

Willie Scroggs coached men's lacrosse at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for 12 seasons after being hired from Johns Hopkins in 1978, winning NCAA championships in 1981, 1982 and 1986. He left coaching after the 1990 season to become an associate athletic director at UNC.

  1. UNC hires Willie Scroggs to coach men's lacrosse

    Athletic director Bill Cobey recruited Scroggs, the top assistant at Johns Hopkins, to build the Tar Heel program. His teams went 120 and 37 over 12 seasons and reached the NCAA tournament every year from 1980 through 1990.

    Scroggs retired from coaching at the end of the 1990 season to become associate athletic director for game operations and outdoor facilities, a job that grew into responsibility for athletics construction and operations on campus.

    Lacrosse alumni and the Educational Foundation paid to refurbish the men's lacrosse locker room at the old Kenan Field House, and it was dedicated in Scroggs's name before lacrosse alumni and fans.

  8. Willie Scroggs retires as a senior associate athletic director at UNC

    Scroggs retired at the end of June 2014 after decades overseeing athletics facilities at Carolina, including work at Carmichael Arena, Boshamer Stadium, Kenan Stadium, Woollen Gym and the Eddie Smith Field House.
