Charles Baskerville was the first editor of the student newspaper, the Tar Heel, and played fullback for Carolina's football teams of 1892 to 1894. He taught chemistry at the university, chaired the department from 1900 to 1904, and in 1903 announced two new elements, carolinium and berzelium, before leaving for the City College of New York.
