Christopher C. Fordham III earned a certificate in medicine at UNC in 1949, was dean of its School of Medicine from 1971 to 1979 and chancellor at Chapel Hill from 1980 to 1988, when faculty research funding grew from 56 to 105 million dollars. The biotechnology building was named Fordham Hall in 1988.
