1. 1971–1979 Christopher Fordham serves as dean of the UNC School of Medicine Fordham, who had earned a certificate in medicine at UNC in 1949, was dean of the School of Medicine from 1971 to 1979 and for part of that time also vice chancellor for health affairs. November 1980 Harold Wallace is reported chosen as UNC's first vice chancellor for university affairs A Faculty Council committee on minority affairs had asked for a new vice chancellor for university affairs to look after Black and minority students and faculty. In November Chancellor Christopher Fordham's choice was reported to be Harold Wallace, pending Board of Governors approval. November 1982 to April 1983 Students march from the Carolina Union to South Building for more Black and women faculty From mid-November 1982 students marched from the Carolina Union to the steps of South Building, at times nearly 200 strong, after the chancellor's yearly report showed 51 Black members among 1,884 faculty. Sonja Stone spoke at one rally, 55 students signed a February 9, 1983 letter to the Daily Tar Heel, and by April a Student Committee on Faculty Hiring had formed to meet faculty candidates. Cannon, a 1975 UNC doctoral graduate who had worked with the University of Georgia Board of Regents, as the university's second full-time affirmative action officer, reporting to Chancellor Fordham.
