Edwin A. Alderman, an 1882 graduate, returned to teach at UNC in 1893 and was its president from 1896 to 1900, when the trustees opened postgraduate courses to women and the Old Well's temple was built. He held segregationist views. Alderman Residence Hall, begun in 1937, took in its first women students in 1943.

Edwin A. Alderman writes up a death mask of Napoleon I that had come to Chapel Hill, signing the piece at the end. It was detached from the North Carolina University Magazine for April 1895 and printed by the students of the University.
Edwin A. Alderman's Fourth of July address of 1894 at the Guilford Battle Ground, on the life of William Hooper, the North Carolina signer of the Declaration of Independence who died in 1790.
