The first volume, 'The First Hundred Years', written by Berryhill with William B. Blythe and Isaac H. Manning, narrates the school's history and reprints portions of Medicine in North Carolina (1972). Raleigh Mann compiled the second volume, a centennial alumni directory, with the school's centennial committee. Published 1979 by the school, illustrated with portraits, 26 cm.

  1. Dr. T. W. Harris opens a private medical school in Chapel Hill In 1878 Dr. T. W. Harris moved from Chatham County to Chapel Hill and started a private medical school there. Within a year the university absorbed it and named him the first dean of its School of Medicine.
  2. UNC establishes its School of Medicine UNC began a medical program in 1879.
  3. The university's medical school reopens under Richard H. Whitehead After Dean T. W. Harris left in 1886, the medical school closed for three years for lack of money. It reopened in 1890 as the Medical Department under Dr. Richard H. Whitehead.
  4. Isaac Hall Manning joins the UNC medical faculty Manning came to the School of Medicine in 1901 as professor of physiology and began teaching bacteriology in 1902.
  5. The university confers its first Doctor of Medicine degrees On the evening of May 7, 1903, Dean Hubert A. Royster presented four graduates of the Medical Department, and the M.D. degree was conferred for the first time in the university's history. People: Hubert Ashley Royster

  9. Cora Zeta Corpening enrolls as the university's first woman candidate for a medical degree When the 1914-15 session opened, Cora Zeta Corpening of Mars Hill became the first woman to enroll at the university as a candidate for a medical degree.
  10. Trustees vote to ask for a 200-bed teaching hospital in Chapel Hill A June 1 report by Dean Isaac H. Manning, Chase and Dr. Richard H. Lewis found the state 45th in hospital beds and short of doctors. Twelve days later the full board voted to ask the legislature for a 200-bed teaching hospital at Chapel Hill, a memorial to the World War dead, so the two-year medical school could grow to four years.   11. Trinity's William P. Few proposes a joint medical school with UNC After the trustees' site committee split on December 16, Few met the committee at the governor's mansion and offered a four-year school with two years at Chapel Hill and two in Durham near Watts Hospital, backed by $1 million from each side and a Trinity endowment.   12. Dean Isaac Hall Manning resigns after President Graham overrules his Jewish quota Manning limited the admission of Jewish medical students.   13. William de Berniere MacNider serves as dean of the UNC School of Medicine MacNider succeeded Charles Staples Mangum as dean of the medical school in 1937 and resigned the deanship in 1940 to return to research. People: Charles S. (Charles Staples) Mangum
  14. MacNider Hall is completed as the first building of the medical school complex The first building constructed in UNC's medical school complex was completed in 1939 and named for MacNider, then dean.
  15. Isaac Hall Manning retires from the medical faculty After leaving the deanship Manning stayed on as a professor until he retired in 1940.
  16. UNC establishes a School of Public Health UNC's Division of Public Health, created within the School of Medicine in 1936 under Dr. Milton Rosenau, separated from the medical school in 1940 and became the School of Public Health, with Rosenau as its first dean. The school is now the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
  17. W. Reece Berryhill becomes dean of the UNC School of Medicine Berryhill, who had been physician-in-chief at the University infirmary and director of the student health service in Chapel Hill since 1933, became professor of medicine and dean of the School of Medicine in 1941. He led the school's expansion from a two-year to a four-year program.
  18. Kenneth M. Brinkhous chairs the UNC Department of Pathology Brinkhous succeeded James B. Bullitt as chair of pathology at the UNC School of Medicine in 1946 and held the post until 1973, building a research program in thrombosis and hemostasis. His department invented the partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test used in clinical laboratories. People: James Bell Bullitt

General Assembly funds the Good Health Plan's four-year medical school and teaching hospital The General Assembly appropriated money in 1947 to expand the UNC medical school at Chapel Hill to four years, enlarge the medical sciences building, and build a 400-bed hospital, a School of Nursing and staff residence halls.   20. UNC admits Edward O. Diggs, its first Black medical student UNC mailed Edward O. Diggs of Winston-Salem, a pre-medical student at A&T College in Greensboro, his letter of admission to the School of Medicine under the trustees' April 4, 1951 policy.   21. Isaac M. Taylor joins the new Department of Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine Taylor, a 1942 Carolina graduate with a Harvard medical degree, returned to Chapel Hill in 1952 at the invitation of medical dean Reece Berryhill as one of the first members of the medical school's department of medicine.   22. North Carolina Memorial Hospital opens North Carolina Memorial Hospital opened to patients on Tuesday, September 2, 1952, without a formal ceremony, as the core of the new University Medical Center. Its opening allowed the UNC School of Medicine to grow from a two-year program into a four-year school.
  23. UNC School of Medicine admits its first third-year class A month after the hospital opened, the School of Medicine admitted its first third-year class, beginning clinical training in Chapel Hill. The school had offered only the first two years of medical study since its Raleigh clinical branch closed in 1910.
  24. North Carolina Memorial Hospital is dedicated Exercises at Chapel Hill on April 23-24, 1953, dedicated North Carolina Memorial Hospital and marked the new four-year School of Medicine and the schools of dentistry and nursing.   25. First four-year class graduates from the UNC School of Medicine In 1954 the UNC School of Medicine graduated its first class of students to complete all four years of medical training. The university's new dental and nursing schools graduated their first classes the same year.
  26. Edward O. Diggs becomes UNC's first Black medical graduate Edward O. Diggs graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in 1955, the first African American to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from the university. James Slade, the school's second Black student, had enrolled in 1953.
  27. Isaac M. Taylor serves as dean of the UNC School of Medicine Taylor succeeded W. Reece Berryhill as dean in 1964. Student enrollment, faculty and research funding grew during his deanship, and a ten-year capital building program began that produced Berryhill Hall, the first phase of the Health Sciences Library, and the Brinkhous-Bullitt and Burnett-Womack Buildings. Christopher Fordham serves as dean of the UNC School of Medicine Fordham, who had earned a certificate in medicine at UNC in 1949, was dean of the School of Medicine from 1971 to 1979 and for part of that time also vice chancellor for health affairs. The Area Health Education Centers program began under him.
  31. General Assembly gives North Carolina Memorial Hospital its own board of directors Legislation passed in July 1971 created a board of directors for the hospital and separated it administratively from the School of Medicine, whose dean it had answered to since 1956.
  32. UNC School of Medicine launches the Area Health Education Centers program The AHEC program began in 1972 with three regions under an 8.5 million dollar federal contract with the UNC School of Medicine, to train and place health professionals across North Carolina. The General Assembly funded a statewide network of nine regions in 1974, and all nine were running by 1975.
  33. Aziz Sancar joins the UNC faculty Sancar joined Carolina's faculty in 1982; he became the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the School of Medicine, where his lab mapped how cells repair damaged DNA.
  34. Oliver Smithies and Nobuyo Maeda join the UNC faculty Smithies and Nobuyo Maeda came to UNC's School of Medicine in 1988; Smithies later described himself as the trailing spouse, UNC having recruited Maeda. People: Aziz Sancar
  35. General Assembly creates the UNC Health Care System Legislation in 1998 created the UNC Health Care System, bringing UNC Hospitals and the clinical work of the School of Medicine under one entity.
  36. UNC School of Medicine starts CAMPOS to train Spanish-speaking physicians Marco Alemán and colleagues founded the Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish in 2004 to prepare medical students to care for Spanish-speaking patients without relying on interpreters. Its first class graduated in 2008, and students do yearly service with Spanish-speaking communities.
  37. UNC opens the Center for Latino Health for Spanish-speaking patients The UNC Center for Latino Health (CELAH) began in 2008 in the School of Medicine and UNC Health Care, offering specialty and primary care in Spanish, same-day access and health education. It served more than 15,000 patients in its first ten years.
