Henry Roland Totten taught botany at UNC from 1914 to 1917 and again from 1919 until he retired in 1963. He followed W. C. Coker as director of the campus arboretum, and his efforts helped secure the site of the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill.

William Chambers Coker and Henry Roland Totten identify the shrubs and climbing plants growing around Chapel Hill, reprinted in 1916 from the Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society, volume 32, number 2. Lionel Dane Melvin, born 1907, left papers covering 1929 and then 1941 to 1976. The papers concern his work as a botanist and horticulturist, including interests in North Carolina geology and in plant conservation through the North Carolina Wild Flower Preservation Society, with Frank Porter Graham, H.
