Oliver Smithies
Oliver Smithies joined UNC's faculty in 1988 with Nobuyo Maeda and became Weatherspoon Eminent Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. His Chapel Hill laboratory produced the first cystic fibrosis animal model in 1992, he kept a plane at Horace Williams Airport, and in 2007 he became the first full-time Carolina faculty member to win a Nobel Prize.
