Ralph Waldo McDonald (1903-1977) ran for governor of North Carolina in 1936, and his papers from that year, about 1,100 items in three linear feet, are part of the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 5413. Political cartoons and campaign literature cover the Democratic Party, campaign funds, contested elections, Duke Power and Clyde Roark Hoey, with photographs of the Order of Gimghoul at Chapel Hill and of Walker Percy.

  1. North Carolina's first Boys State meets on the UNC campus The Institute ran the week-long civics program for the state American Legion, modeled on one begun in Illinois in 1935. About 135 high school boys spent up to three hours a day in class on government besides sports, heard Governor Hoey and other officials, and elected Douglass Hunt their governor. Max Gardner on hand. A reception followed in Graham Memorial, and guests stayed for the Virginia football game the next day.
