Samuel Field Phillips grew up in Chapel Hill, where his family moved in 1826, practised law there from 1845 and taught in the university law school from 1854 to 1859. He represented Orange in the House of Commons before moving to Raleigh in 1867 and later became U.S. solicitor general.
