Patterson H. McDade

Patterson H. McDade was a Chapel Hill property owner and town official in the middle of the 1800s. He bought a lot on West Franklin Street from Professor Elisha Mitchell in 1847. In 1851 the General Assembly named him one of the five commissioners of Chapel Hill when it first gave the village a governing board. In 1871 he was a teacher at a Sunday school celebration held in the university chapel.

  2. The General Assembly passes an act incorporating Chapel Hill under five commissioners Chapter 330 of the 1850-51 session laws, ratified January 29, 1851, made Manuel Fetter, Jesse Hargrave, Patterson H. McDade, Elisha Mitchell and Jones Watson the commissioners of Chapel Hill, with five commissioners to be elected each February after. The legislature charters four plank road companies through Orange County The 1855 charters were for roads from Chapel Hill to Morrisville and to Durhamsville, from Hillsborough to Chapel Hill, and from Hillsborough to Milton, with capital from $20,000 to $150,000.   4. The Chapel Hill Baptist Church starts its Sunday school The Sunday school opened with P. H. McDade, the church's first clerk, as superintendent. It soon had a library of about three hundred books, and in 1861 its pupils memorized 20,000 Bible verses. People: Patterson H.   5. Chapel Hill's commissioners enter resolutions on the death of their fellow commissioner Elisha Mitchell The village board recorded its loss of Mitchell, who sat with them as a commissioner, and ordered the resolutions entered in the village journals.
