Collier Cobb

Collier Cobb taught geology at UNC for forty years from 1892 and became head of its geology department. In Chapel Hill he chaired the Public School Committee for many years, ran the Baptist church's Sunday school for twenty years, and after 1915 turned a gullied tract into the residential park now called Cobb Terrace.

Collier Cobb's memorial sketch of Cornelia Phillips Spencer, the Chapel Hill writer who died in 1908, reprinted that year from the April number of the University of North Carolina Magazine and issued by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies. Pages 261 to 269 with a portrait plate. Topics include women of Chapel Hill and the town's social life and customs.

Collier Cobb (1862-1934) taught at the University of North Carolina and made photographs there from the 1890s into the 1920s. Approximately 500 items in seven linear feet, P0013 in the North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives at UNC. Subjects include campus buildings, the Old Well, alumni, employees, and faculty, with portraits including Wilson Caldwell, Harry Woodburn Chase, R. D. W. Connor, and Frederick H. Koch.

The packet was made by the Grogan Photo System of Milwaukee, and the pictures seem to be copies of photographs by Collier Cobb (1862 to 1934), who taught geology at the university. Named for B. Perry Morrison, Jr.

Collier Cobb's sketch of William George Randall, the North Carolina painter, printed at Chapel Hill in 1894 by the Philanthropic and Dialectic Societies and detached from the North Carolina University magazine for December of that year. Cobb signed the piece at the end. Randall was a North Carolina artist and university alumnus.
