Supporting local figure
William Butler, a farmer living near Sandy Creek in Orange County, was appointed a county tax collector in 1768 and a deputy sheriff in 1770 as he became a principal Regulator leader. He was central to the Regulator actions at Hillsborough in 1768 and 1770 and at Alamance in 1771, was declared an outlaw that June, and fled to Virginia.
