1. April 15, 1891 The class of 1891 holds its Class Day in Memorial Hall The senior class held its Class Day exercises in Memorial Hall. J. V. Lewis gave the class oration, W. H. Wills read the class history and A. H. Patterson the class poem, and a class cake was sealed to be opened at the first reunion in 1895; Prof. Winston presented the gymnasium medal to R. B. Hunter. 2. April 17-18, 1891 Chapel Hill celebrates the university baseball team's win over Trinity When word came that the university nine had beaten Trinity 8 to 3 at Winston, both literary societies adjourned for a meeting in front of the South Building while the college bells and several town bells rang. The next day the University train brought the team in from University Station decked with flags, and a procession of faculty, students and townspeople led by a brass band escorted the players to the hotel. 6. November 21, 1918 The Chapel Hill Red Cross elects A. H. Patterson chairman at its annual meeting At its annual meeting on Thursday, November 21, 1918, the chapter elected Dr. A. H. Patterson chairman, with Alice Noble vice-chairman, Nellie Roberson secretary and Dudley Carroll treasurer. 7. spring 1919 Acting dean of students A. H. Patterson reports on drinking at the spring dances When complaints about drinking at the revived spring dances reached President Chase, Patterson, whom Chase had made acting dean of students, blamed most of it on visiting alumni and said there was little he could do about the newer dances. 8. May 10, 1919 Chapel Hill welcomes home its World War soldiers alongside Confederate veterans On Saturday, May 10, 1919, a parade of Confederate veterans, returned soldiers and sailors, former student soldiers and town groups filled Franklin and Columbia Streets. Over 2,000 people crowded Memorial Hall to hear Archibald Henderson, L. P. McLendon and Joseph Hyde Pratt, with William Cain presiding. May 1921 The diocesan convention votes to enlarge the Chapel of the Cross Meeting in Durham, the Diocese of North Carolina endorsed the parish's building plan and named a fund committee, and the Bishop of East Carolina named another. A July appeal put the cost at $70,000 to lengthen the old church at the chancel end and add a large assembly room behind the Battle Memorial Parish House. 10. June 10, 1924 The Gimghouls vote to build a lodge at Dromgoole Rock Meeting at luncheon, members and alumni of the Order of Gimghouls agreed unanimously to build a lodge on the crest at Dromgoole Rock near Piney Prospect, paid for with money from their lot sales, and named T. F. Hickerson, A. H. Patterson and W. S. Bernard to carry it through. The Weekly put the likely cost at $35,000 to $45,000 and described plans for a stone and shingle building with a round ballroom, with at least 25 acres kept as the order's park. December 1925 Chase cancels all campus dances after reports of drinking at a Durham dance After newspapers described liquor and broken fixtures at a German Club dance at Durham's Washington Duke Hotel following the 1925 Thanksgiving game, the club disciplined twenty-five students and alumni, and Chase called off all campus dances until Easter or later. 12. September 9, 1928 Dean Andrew H. Patterson of the school of applied science dies Andrew H. Patterson, dean of the University's school of applied science since 1911 and professor of physics since 1908, died of heart disease in New Hampshire. Funeral services were held in Chapel Hill on September 11 before burial in the Moravian cemetery at Winston-Salem, and the faculty adopted a memorial on September 21.
