Cheshire read law under William K. Ruffin of Hillsborough before taking his license in January 1872. Ordered deacon in 1878, he was assigned to the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill at the request of university president Kemp P. Battle and served there until he left for Charlotte in 1881.

Address by Bishop Joseph Blount Cheshire at St. Matthew's Church in Hillsborough on 24 August 1924, marking the parish's hundredth anniversary. Printed in Durham in 1925 at the vestry's order, with a foreword by the rector. Cheshire discusses George Micklejohn, William Mercer Green and Moses Ashley Curtis.
A biographical article on Judge John Haywood and his departure from North Carolina, signed J.B.C., Jr. and detached from the January 1895 North Carolina University Magazine. Published at Chapel Hill by the students of the university, it belongs with the magazine's long series of sketches of judges and public men in the state.
