Samuel Jackson Brockwell

Samuel Jackson Brockwell was a Chapel Hill businessman who brought movies to the town. In 1902 he put up a three-story brick building at Franklin and Columbia streets, and in 1909 he opened the Pickwick, Chapel Hill's first movie theatre. He moved it in 1916 to a new building on the south side of Franklin and reopened it in May 1924 after a fire gutted it.
