Sydney Nathans's biography of Mary Walker, an enslaved woman from Orange County who escaped to the North in the mid nineteenth century and spent the following decades in Cambridge, Massachusetts, working to free the family she had left behind. Chapter titles trace her flight, her years among Northern friends, a rescue plot, a long silence, and the reunion that gives the book its close. Published 2012 by Harvard University Press, 330 pages with 20 pages of plates, illustrations and maps.

The Duke and North Carolina basketball rivalry written together by Johnny Moore and Art Chansky, the latter a sports reporter who has followed it since his student days at UNC. The book opens with the 2014 season and moves through recruiting battles old and new, 'Black and Blue Sunday', 'Blood and Roses', and chapters on the rivalry's heroes, leaders and teachers, with a foreword by Jay Bilas and a photo gallery. Published by Triumph Books in 2014, 289 pages.

Miss Mary's Money

Jones, H. G. · 2014 · McFarland & Co.

H. G. Jones follows the fortune of Mary Ruffin Smith (1814-1885), the unmarried heiress whose Orange and Chatham County lands passed at her death to the University of North Carolina and the Episcopal Church. Chapters profile her grandfather Francis Jones, then trace the bequest through a quarrel among Episcopalians over Price Creek, the Chapel of the Cross and the university's buildings. A December 1885 New York Times report called the gift money; Jones shows it was land. Published by McFarland in 2014, 231 pages.

This reprint from Lewisville, North Carolina adds an afterword by Wayne King. Civil rights and race relations in Chapel Hill are its subjects. 340 pages with illustrations and portraits.

He credits party competition with the state's rise from poverty. This 2010 second edition adds the Edwards and Easley scandals, Elizabeth Dole's defeat, Beverly Perdue's election and Barack Obama's 2008 win in the state.

Nearly 400 photographs and maps illustrate its 1,314 pages.

    Social history of North Carolina from precolonial times to the present, told through historic sites and the ordinary people who lived and worked around them. Joe A. Mobley edited this 2003 revision, which gathers the five books of 1983 into one volume of 614 pages, with text by Elizabeth A. Fenn, Harry L. Watson and others, more than 250 photographs, new maps by Mark Anderson Moore and a list of sites to visit.

    Dorothy Williams Potter's transcription of the 1820 federal census of North Carolina, supplemented with tax lists. The Orange County schedules are among those covered, naming heads of household in the county a generation after the Revolution. Potter first published it in 1972; the copy in the library's Wall Local History Collection is her second edition of 1993.

    E. Lawrence Lee's account of a century of fighting between colonists and Indian nations in North Carolina: early clashes to 1711, the Tuscarora War and the Barnwell and Moore expeditions, the Yamassee and Cheraw wars, the Catawbas of the Piedmont, the Cherokees of the mountains, and the French and Indian and Cherokee wars. First published in 1963 for the Carolina Charter Tercentenary Commission; this 2011 reprint has 105 pages with maps.

    Wilma Hammett, Jan Christensen and Joan Gosper wrote and compiled this illustrated book about North Carolina women whose service reached their families, communities and state. The North Carolina Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation published the 340 pages in 2011 with the foundation of the state's Extension and Community Association.

    Vann R. Newkirk documents the lynching of at least 168 people in North Carolina between 1865 and 1941, giving full accounts of the most notorious cases, including the killing of Plummer Bullock. Later chapters take up the Klan, the state's attempts from 1919 to 1923 to punish mob members, the Needleman case and a drift toward what he calls legal lynching. An appendix lists every documented case.

David Louis Sterrett Brook, a former head of the State Historic Preservation Office, tells its story through 1974. Published in 1997 by the Division of Archives and History with Preservation North Carolina, 205 pages.
