Robert W. Winston's 1939 address on Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina and the memorial tablets set in its walls, given when tablets honoring Colonel Robert Bingham, Ambassador Robert Worth Bingham and Senator Matt W. Ransom were accepted. Printed at Chapel Hill, it records how those tablets came to be placed in the hall.

Robert W. Winston, born in 1860, wrote this account of going back to student life at the University of North Carolina in his sixties. It appeared in the Christmas 1924 number of Scribner's Magazine, pages 608 to 614. Chapel Hill and the university of that era are its setting.

Winston is the first student to arrive for the reopening Battle names Francis Donnell Winston of Bertie County the first student on the Hill in 1875, arriving a day ahead of other entrants with his brother Robert and Charles Bond. Bond was the only student to enter the agricultural department on opening day, and Battle calls him the first student of the first college of agriculture in the state. People: Robert W.   2. Alumni pledge an endowment for a chair of history At the 1890 commencement banquet, alumni answered a call to endow a chair of history: Julian S.
