Dan K. Moore

Dan K. Moore graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1927 and studied law in Chapel Hill for a year. As governor from 1965 to 1969 he set up the nine-member commission, headed by David Britt, that recommended leaving speaker policy to each campus's trustees after the 1963 law barring Communists from speaking on state campuses.

E. M. Adams, a professor of philosophy at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, wrote Governor Dan K. Moore on 2 June 1965 urging repeal of the Speaker Ban and setting out his views on academic freedom. The 1963 law barred known Communists and certain others from speaking at the state's public colleges.

Rabbi Joseph H. Levine took Governor Dan K. Moore to task on 8 June 1965 for staying silent on the Speaker Ban, and argued that the legislature was punishing the university at Chapel Hill for its liberal reputation. The 1963 law limited campus speakers at the state's public colleges.

  2. UNC trustees' executive committee bars Frank Wilkinson and Herbert Aptheker from the Chapel Hill campus Meeting in Governor Dan K. Moore's office in Raleigh, the executive committee of the UNC board of trustees voted 8 to 3 to deny university facilities to Aptheker and Wilkinson and suspended all other invitations covered by the speaker ban law until the full board adopted rules.
