Richard H. Battle
Richard H. Battle (1835–1912), a Raleigh lawyer and brother of Kemp Plummer Battle, taught mathematics and Greek at the University of North Carolina from 1854 to 1858 and was a university trustee from 1879 to 1912, becoming secretary-treasurer of the board in 1891. He served as a Confederate officer and as private secretary to Governor Zebulon Vance.
