Kenneth Joel Zogry's history of the Daily Tar Heel, the UNC Chapel Hill student newspaper, published by UNC Press in 2018, 361 pages with illustrations, online edition. Zogry follows the paper from its 1893 start as organ of the Athletic Association through the eras his chapter titles name: 'Crack-brained professors and baby radicals' (1923 to 1941), 'The truth in eight-point type' (1941 to 1959) and 'A free press must prevail' (1971 to 1993).

1984 · U.N.C. Committee to Liberate the Tar Heel

Conservative sheet aimed squarely at the campus daily, published in Chapel Hill from 1984 by a group calling itself the U.N.C. Committee to Liberate the Tar Heel, whose subtitle turns editorial page into editorial plague. Volumes measure 28 to 36 cm, and student political activity at the University of North Carolina runs through it.

Advertising promotion from the Daily Tar Heel, built on a spring 1936 survey of what men students at the University of North Carolina bought and what they spent. Figures for twenty-eight commodities give an average outlay per student, each followed by a pitch for the paper as a place to advertise. The pamphlet sells the Chapel Hill campus as a market worth a million and a half dollars.

In the chronology

  1. The Tar Heel publishes its first issue The first issue of The Tar Heel, volume 1, number 1, appeared on Thursday, February 23, 1893, as a weekly published under the auspices of the University Athletic Association, with Charles Baskerville as editor in chief. The student paper took the name The Daily Tar Heel in 1929. People: Charles Baskerville
  2. A. A. Kluttz advertises his University Bookstore to students in the Tar Heel The student paper's list of regular Chapel Hill advertisers included A. A. Kluttz, whose University Bookstore advertised shoes, hats, underwear, pictures and souvenirs. A dentist, Dr. William Lynch, advertised an office in the Kluttz Building.
  3. The Tar Heel reports the monument's unveiling put off from the 1911 commencement for want of funds The paper reported that the UDC chapters had been unable to fulfill their pledges toward the $7,500, so the monument could not be unveiled at the June 1911 commencement, the fiftieth anniversary of the war's beginning, and would certainly be unveiled in 1912. It was in fact dedicated in June 1913.
  4. The Tar Heel counts some 300 student cases and three deaths as the three-week campus quarantine eases Confined to the campus for three weeks, the Student Army Training Corps men had their first leave on Saturday, October 19, under orders not to leave town. The paper counted about 300 cases among the students, three deaths and 35 still in the college infirmary, credited the second-year medical students with keeping the toll low, and noted that both of the university's physicians, Dr. Mangum and Dr. MacNider, had fallen ill.   5. The Tar Heel becomes the Daily Tar Heel The commencement issue of June 7, 1929, was the first published as The Daily Tar Heel, after a plan to turn the tri-weekly Tar Heel into a daily went to the Student Activities Committee. Regular daily publication began with the new volume on September 20, 1929.
  6. The Daily Tar Heel raises a relief fund for Orange County's poor As hard times reached the county, the student paper asked students and townspeople for gifts. From January 31 through May 12, 1930, it collected $202.73, enough to give food to more than forty families.
  7. Ed Yoder and Louis Kraar edit the Daily Tar Heel UNC students Ed Yoder and Louis Kraar were listed together as editors of the Daily Tar Heel in the spring and fall of 1955.
  8. John E. Greenbacker Jr. serves as associate editor of the Daily Tar Heel The masthead of the December 7, 1966 Daily Tar Heel lists Greenbacker as associate editor under editor Fred Thomas. He wrote signed opinion pieces, and a letter in the same issue takes issue with his Sunday column profiling the SDS leader Gary Waller. People: Gary Waller
