Leonidas Polk Denmark Family Papers

Denmark, Leonidas Polk · 1861

Papers of the Denmark family, 1861 to 1966, gathered by Leonidas Polk Denmark (1892 to 1964), grandson of the farm leader Colonel Leonidas Lafayette Polk (1837 to 1892). They cover Polk's agricultural journalism, the Farmers' Alliance and Populist politics, the Civil War, World War I and the 1918 influenza. Hillsborough appears among the places.

Statewide Civil War collection of the State Archives of North Carolina, dated 1860 to 1965. It gathers pardon petitions, bounty payrolls, quartermaster vouchers and supply papers, disabled veterans' claims and letters about artificial limbs, regimental and unit papers, muster rolls, diaries, reminiscences, clippings and sheet music. Orange County is one of the many North Carolina counties represented.

    Two centuries of the Lee family of Virginia, from Richard Lee, who founded the line in the colony in the seventeenth century, to Robert E. Lee, in a family biography by Burton J. Hendrick, a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Little, Brown published it in 1935; 455 pages with portraits, plates and a folding genealogical table.

  • Rebecca Wall Collection · NC 920 SNO Southern Generals: Their Lives and Campaigns Snow, William Parker · 1866

    Biographical sketches of eighteen Confederate generals, compiled in New York by William Parker Snow, the English Arctic voyager and author. Robert E. Lee fills the first 160 pages; the rest include Stonewall Jackson, Beauregard, Joseph E. Johnston, Longstreet, Stuart, Hood and Wade Hampton. Snow worked from official papers, letters and newspapers. This 1866 edition, 500 pages with portraits, revises one issued anonymously in 1865; the book reappeared in 1867 as 'Lee and His Generals'.
