John W. Thompson

John W. Thompson (1844–1912) grew up on an Eno River farm near Cedar Grove and taught a neighborhood school in a log cabin there. He was superintendent of the Orange County schools from 1890 to 1895, then school supervisor under the county commissioners after the state closed the office, and superintendent again until 1901.

  1. Justices and commissioners elect a new board of education and school superintendent In joint session on June 3 the justices and commissioners chose John Thompson, W. V. Andrews and D. S. Parker as the county board of education. The next day, at a joint meeting of the commissioners and the new board, B. C. Patton was elected county superintendent of public instruction in place of the Rev. J. L. Currie, who had resigned. People: John W.   2. John W. Thompson of Cedar Grove becomes superintendent of the Orange County schools John W. Thompson, a Cedar Grove teacher, took over the county schools from B. C. Patton in June 1890. He held the post until the board was abolished in 1895 and stayed on as supervisor under the county commissioners. People: John W.   3. Justices and commissioners hold their last joint meeting At the final joint session the justices elected John Thompson county superintendent of common schools, chose D. H. Hamilton, W. A.   5. A new state act restores the Orange County Board of Education under C. P. Burch After two years of the commissioners running the schools, a legislative act brought back the county board with C. P. Burch as chairman and Albert Holmes and James Monk as members. Capt. John P. Lockhart took Monk's seat when he resigned, and the board made John W. Thompson superintendent again. People: John W. The 1899 school report shows two and a half times as much spent on white schools as Black Supervisor John Thompson's report for 1899 counted 50 white and 25 Black schools and $4,391.51 spent on white schools against $1,688.09 on Black schools.
