  2. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Chuck Stone joins the UNC journalism faculty

    Stone came to UNC-Chapel Hill in 1991 and taught journalism there until he retired in 2005, holding the Walter Spearman professorship.

  3. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Holden Thorp serves as tenth chancellor at Chapel Hill

    Thorp, a UNC alumnus and chemist, took office on July 1, 2008 and spent his first day with student leaders at the Campus Y. He left in 2013 to become provost at Washington University in St. Louis.

  4. Law, policy or court · Chapel Hill UNC discloses possible academic misconduct in its football program

    An NCAA and university inquiry into agent benefits to football players, set off by a player's tweet on May 31, 2010, turned up possible academic misconduct by a tutor, which Thorp announced at a press conference. Later investigation found grade changes and classes that did not meet in the African and Afro-American studies department.

  5. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Chancellor Thorp announces his resignation

    After two years of scandals in the football program and the African and Afro-American studies department, and a fundraiser's resignation over personal trips, Thorp announced he would resign. Students and faculty held a rally asking him to stay.

  6. Appointment, election or service · Orange County Ellie Kinnaird resigns her state senate seat

    Kinnaird announced her resignation after nine terms, saying she could not get anything done in the short session as one of seventeen Democrats in a fifty-member chamber. She said she would instead work with churches and community groups to help voters obtain the photo identification the state had just begun to require. Democrats from the counties she represented were to choose her successor.

  7. Violence or armed conflict · Chapel Hill Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha are killed in Chapel Hill

    On February 10, 2015, neighbor Craig Hicks shot and killed Deah Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister Razan Abu-Salha, 19, in the couple's Chapel Hill condominium. Hicks pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in June 2019 and received three consecutive life sentences without parole.

  8. Law, policy or court · Chapel Hill The Board of Governors rejects the history center and appoints a task force with a March 15 deadline

    After a nearly three-hour closed session the Board of Governors declined the trustees' $5.3 million history center, citing cost and public safety, and named five of its members to work with Folt and the trustees on a new proposal by March 15, 2019. Folt said the plan 'hasn't satisfied anyone' and that the campus would now look at off-campus options.

  9. Closing or ending · Countywide Durham–Orange light rail project ends

    On March 27, 2019, the GoTriangle board voted unanimously to stop planning the 18-mile Durham-Orange light rail line between Chapel Hill and Durham after Duke University declined to sign needed agreements. Orange County commissioners voted unanimously on April 2 to end the county's work on it.

  10. Chapel Hill Sylvia Hatchell resigns after an outside review of the women's basketball program

    UNC put Hatchell on paid leave on April 1, 2019, while a Charlotte law firm reviewed the program after players raised concerns. The review reported racially insensitive remarks, pressure on players over injuries and a breakdown between coach and players, and she resigned that month.

  11. Disaster or outbreak · Chapel Hill UNC reopening produces a COVID-19 outbreak

    UNC-Chapel Hill began in-person classes on August 10, 2020, reported four COVID-19 clusters in residence halls, private student housing and a fraternity within days, and on August 17 announced that undergraduate classes would move online from August 19. Campus test positivity rose from 2.8 percent to 13.6 percent in one week.

  12. Appointment, election or service · Dean E. Smith Center, Chapel Hill Roy Williams announces his retirement at the Smith Center

    Williams, 70, announced his retirement at a Smith Center news conference after 33 seasons as a college head coach, with 903 wins and three NCAA titles at UNC.

  13. Naming or commemoration · Carrboro Merge Records marks 35 years with four shows at Cat's Cradle

    Merge celebrated its 35th anniversary with four shows at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, the club that had held its earlier anniversary festivals, in the same year the label was named to the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
