Laura Ballance moved to Chapel Hill to study anthropology at the University of North Carolina, where she met Mac McCaughan. In 1989 the two founded the band Superchunk and the record label Merge, which she still runs with him. She stopped touring with Superchunk in 2013.

Chapters cover his music teachers and 'cheap lessons', a stretch in Nashville, the band's first albums and the music business, 'Rockin' the suburbs', going solo, and the years after a low point, told through anecdotes and working advice.
