Hortense McClinton

McClinton became the first Black professor at UNC-Chapel Hill when the School of Social Work hired her in 1966, and she taught there until she retired in 1984. In December 2021 the university renamed the former Aycock Residence Hall as Hortense McClinton Residence Hall.

Hortense McClinton joins the UNC School of Social Work as the university's first Black faculty member McClinton turned down a grant-funded UNC offer in 1964 and accepted a better-funded position in the School of Social Work in July 1966. The BSM presents recommendations on Black campus life to the chancellor's committee on minorities The BSM gave the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Minorities and the Disadvantaged eight recommendations, among them more Black recruitment, a permanent Black orientation commission, BSM review of Black administrative hires, an Afro-American Studies department and permanent status for Upendo Lounge.   4. UNC renames Aycock Residence Hall for Hortense McClinton On the chancellor's recommendation the trustees voted to put McClinton's name on the residence hall that had carried Governor Charles B.
