Waightstill Avery

Avery was a delegate to the provincial congress that met at Hillsborough in 1775 and to the congress at Halifax in 1776, where he served on the committee that drew up the North Carolina constitution. The first General Assembly named him the state's first attorney general in 1777.

The Congress organized the next day, its members signed the test of allegiance on August 23, and it sat until September 10.
