  2. The General Joseph E. Johnston Motel is among motels that agree to admit Black guests

    Law, policy or court · US 70 at Interstate 85, near the Durham County line

    The Carolina Times reported that all eleven motels in the Durham area, the General Joseph Johnston Motel among them, had agreed to admit Black guests.

  3. Central High principal A. L. Stanback dies

    Life event · Central High School, Hillsborough

    Albert Leon Stanback, who came to Central as a coach and mathematics teacher and led it for more than twenty years, died after a short illness. His funeral was held in the school's auditorium. Under him the school grew to about 1,200 students.

  4. Harper and Row publishes John Ehle's The Free Men, an account of the Chapel Hill protests

    Ehle's nonfiction book traced the 1963–1964 civil rights campaign in Chapel Hill through three of its leaders, John Dunne, Pat Cusick and Quinton Baker, from the first pickets at a cafe to mass arrests and long prison sentences.

  6. First Community Baptist Church is organized in Hillsborough

    Founding or opening · 509 Eno Street, Hillsborough

    First Community Baptist Church, which worships at 509 Eno Street in Hillsborough, dates its founding to 1986. It marked its twentieth anniversary in November 2006 and its twenty-fifth in November 2011.

  7. John Dee Holeman and Joe and Odell Thompson open UNC's bicentennial folk heritage series

    Bluesman and buckdancer John Dee Holeman and the Mebane string band duo Joe and Odell Thompson opened From the Outer Banks to the Blue Ridge: A Celebration of North Carolina's Folk Heritage at 2 p.m. on March 23, 1994, in Person Hall. The free series was part of UNC's Bicentennial Observance.

  8. Orange County Public Library offers English as a second language classes

    Founding or opening · Hillsborough; Carrboro

    By December 1997 the library held a Saturday English as a second language class in Hillsborough and English conversation and beginning English classes at the Carrboro Branch Library, run by an ESL coordinator. A 1999 statewide article said the library had started ESL tutoring and a conversation group several years before and that demand led the county to fund a full-time coordinator.

  9. Lightnin' Wells and John Dee Holeman play the Hillsborough Arts Council's Traditional Music Series

    The Hillsborough Arts Council's 2007 Traditional Music Series presented Lightnin' Wells and John Dee Holeman at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2007, at the Masonic Lodge, 142 West King Street, in downtown Hillsborough.

  10. Bill Thorpe and Dean Smith are added to the Peace and Justice Plaza marker

    Naming or commemoration · Peace and Justice Plaza, Chapel Hill

    At a town Peace and Justice Celebration, the names of former Council member Bill Thorpe and UNC basketball coach Dean Smith were added to the granite marker, which already honored 13 local leaders. Thorpe's son William spoke about him.
