William F. Strowd

William F. Strowd (1832–1911), son of an Orange County family, enrolled at Chapel Hill in 1861 in the Orange Light Infantry. He farmed in Chatham County and served two terms in Congress as a Populist, 1895–1899, then moved to Chapel Hill in 1908 to live with his son Robert and is buried there.

Strowd and other young men of the area, who had begun organizing a volunteer company on April 6, 1861, met at Chapel Hill on April 22 and enrolled for six months.
