Max Steele's collection of short stories, published by Algonquin Books in 1988 in a first edition of 185 pages. The work describes fiction about North Carolina writers and about social life in the Southern States. Steele directed the creative writing program at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for many years, which is the collection's link to the county.

Max Steele (1922-2005) read his paper 'Color the daydream yellow' to the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies at Chapel Hill, and this compilation gathers his introductory remarks with an extract of the piece from the Quarterly review of literature, volume 15, numbers 3 and 4, of 1968. Nineteen unnumbered leaves dated 1977, with a cover letter from Steele dated 1978. In UNC's North Carolina Collection.
