1. 1967–1989 Louis D. 2. 1969 Blyden Jackson joins UNC's English department and becomes its first tenured Black professor Blyden Jackson joined the UNC-Chapel Hill English department in 1969 and became the university's first tenured Black faculty member. 3. 1970–1974 Carolyn Kizer joins the UNC English faculty to head poetry writing Kizer joined UNC's English department on February 1, 1970, as a visiting lecturer, to develop a poetry curriculum and head the poetry side of the creative writing program under Max Steele. 5. 1982 Louis Rubin and Shannon Ravenel start the press that became Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill Rubin, then a UNC English professor, and editor Shannon Ravenel formed Bright Leaf Press, Inc., working from a garage at Rubin's home with money for a first printing of 1,500 copies. As Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill it went on to publish Clyde Edgerton, Dori Sanders and Jill McCorkle.
