Margaret Nygard, a Durham teacher, social worker and environmentalist, led the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley, formed after Durham proposed a reservoir in the river valley in 1965. Under her leadership it worked with The Nature Conservancy, the City of Durham, Orange County and the state to create Eno River State Park in 1973.

The article concerns natural areas and recreation along the Eno in Orange and Durham counties, including the work of the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley.
Papers of Margaret Nygard, 1925 to 1995, roughly 26,000 items filling seventy two linear feet in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 5232. Dated from the 1880s to 2004 and heaviest in the 1970s through the 1990s, they carry the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley, the Festival for the Eno, state parks and natural areas, and the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority.
