Holger Nygard

Holger Nygard came to Durham for a professorship at Duke and lived with his wife Margaret beside the Eno River. On August 16, 1966, the couple led a group that opposed a plan to dam the Eno at a Durham City Council meeting, and with others they organized the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley.

Papers of Margaret Nygard, 1925 to 1995, roughly 26,000 items filling seventy two linear feet in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 5232. Dated from the 1880s to 2004 and heaviest in the 1970s through the 1990s, they carry the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley, the Festival for the Eno, state parks and natural areas, and the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority.

The Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley forms Residents who had begun organizing in 1965 against plans to dam the Eno for a water-supply reservoir formed the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley on October 14, 1966.
