The Fredricks site is found and excavated and Occaneechi Town is located UNC archaeologists trying to relocate the Wall site in the spring of 1983 found European trade goods among Indian pottery in a garden about a hundred yards away, and dug there for four seasons. They uncovered a palisaded village of about a quarter of an acre with ten to twelve houses set around a plaza, a sweat lodge and a cemetery outside the stockade, and identified it as the Occaneechi town Lawson visited in 1701. Hillsborough Preservation Fund holds an option on the Hillsborough Archaeological District land James Rae Freeland, who owned 20 acres with six Indian sites, put off building and gave the fund a six-month option, expiring Feb. 28, to raise the $120,000 price; the Eno River Association led the search for a buyer. Dickens's final report on the 1986 excavations at the Occaneechi Town site on the Eno River near Hillsborough, prepared by the Research Laboratories of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina and dated May 1987. Funded by a National Geographic Society grant and later numbered as the laboratories' research report 8, it covers the archaeology of the Occaneechi and culture change at the site. 171 leaves with illustrations, maps and a bibliography.
