1. 1995–1998 Elson Floyd serves as UNC's first executive vice chancellor Chancellor Michael Hooker hired Floyd in 1995 for the newly created post of executive vice chancellor, overseeing auxiliary services, facilities, business and finance, human resources, information technology, student affairs and university advancement. 2. October 12, 1995 Michael Hooker is inaugurated as chancellor at Chapel Hill Hooker, who took office on July 1, 1995, was inaugurated on University Day. September 11, 1996 UNC suspends afternoon classes for a campuswide Hurricane Fran cleanup Chancellor Michael Hooker suspended classes from noon on Wednesday so students, faculty and staff could clear storm debris. Nearly 1,000 students reported to the Old Well within the first hour, working with University forester Kirk Pelland's crews, and Coker Arboretum staff expected their cleanup to run into the winter. 4. November 14, 1997 The BSM marches to South Building with 22 new demands for Chancellor Hooker On BSM Day, marking the organization's 30th year, more than 100 members dressed in black rallied in the Pit and marched to South Building, where President India Williams read 22 new demands; Chancellor Hooker was away. They asked for, among other things, a monument to the enslaved people who built the university, repair of their graves, Upendo Lounge as a Black student union and a BSM Month. 5. December 2, 1997 Former UNC police officer C. E. Swain sues the university Alan McSurely filed suit for C. E. Swain, a fired UNC police officer, alleging discrimination and violation of his constitutional rights; Swain said he came under pressure after ticketing the daughter of trustee Billy Armfield. November 11, 1998 Chancellor Hooker answers BSM members' questions on the 22 demands Chancellor Michael Hooker came to a BSM general body meeting with Vice Chancellor Susan Kitchen, university counsel Susan Ehringhaus and Harold Wallace. They said some demands, such as a November BSM Month, had been met but others, like keeping the Pogue Scholarship separate, raised legal problems; members also pressed him on the disputed homecoming election. 8. June 29, 1999 Chancellor Michael Hooker dies in office Hooker was chief administrative officer at Chapel Hill from July 1, 1995 until his death on June 29, 1999. He was found to have lymphoma in January 1999 and took medical leave from April, when William O. July 1999 UNC President Molly Broad names William McCoy to lead Chapel Hill after Chancellor Hooker's death After Chancellor Michael Hooker died of cancer in June 1999, UNC system president Molly Broad appointed William O. McCoy, who had served as acting chancellor during Hooker's medical leave, to lead UNC-Chapel Hill until a permanent chancellor was chosen. 10. September 23, 1999 A Clayton estate bequest completes the money for a freestanding Stone Center UNC announced a $28.6 million gift from the estate of alumnus David Benjamin Clayton. Under allocations Chancellor Michael Hooker set before his death in June, interest on $11 million, about $250,000 a year, went to the Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center, which the BSM president said completed the funding for a freestanding building between the Bell Tower and Coker Hall.
