C. Hugh Holman taught English at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1946, chaired the English department from 1957 to 1962, and served as dean of the Graduate School from 1963 to 1966 and provost from 1966 to 1968. He wrote or edited 26 books, among them A Handbook to Literature.
