Ralph Henry Graves (1851–1889) returned to Chapel Hill in 1875 as professor of engineering at the newly reopened university and was a professor of mathematics there when he died in 1889. His widow, Julia Graves, then ran a boardinghouse for students on the site of the present Carolina Inn.
