In the chronology

  1. UNC Lineberger Cancer Center is established UNC established a cancer research center in 1975 under founding director Joseph Pagano. Later named for the Lineberger family of Belmont, who helped fund its 1984 building, it earned NCI comprehensive status in 1990 and is North Carolina's only public one.
  2. North Carolina Cancer Hospital opens The North Carolina Cancer Hospital opened as the clinical home of UNC Lineberger.
  3. N.C. Cancer Hospital is dedicated The seven-story, 315,000-square-foot N.C. Cancer Hospital, built with a 180 million dollar authorization from the General Assembly, was dedicated in September 2009. It tripled the space available for treating cancer patients at UNC.
