1. 1833 or 1834 William McPheeters presses the trustees to raise the standard for admission McPheeters, principal of the Raleigh Academy, urged the university trustees to raise the requirements for entering the university. The board agreed and set new terms: all of arithmetic and algebra to simple equations, the prose of Jacob's Greek Reader, all of Virgil, and Cicero's select orations. 2. January 2, 1835 Trustees create an executive committee to run the university At Duncan Cameron's instance the board placed management in a seven-member executive committee including the governor, with the powers of the land, appointments and building committees and the right to change studies and dismiss faculty. 3. about 1836 Trustees ask Elisha Mitchell and William McPheeters to compare the university with leading colleges The board named Professor Elisha Mitchell and the Rev. Dr. William McPheeters to study the courses of the leading American colleges and report what the university should change to match them. 4. 1837 Trustees raise a sandstone monument to Caldwell on the campus The trustees adopted a design by Thomas Waitt, the master mechanic in charge of university repairs, for a shaft of local sandstone cut by J. B. Turney. It soon crumbled, and the marble slab meant for its Latin inscription arrived so badly cut that it was smashed, so the monument never bore a name.
