Braxton Bynum Lloyd

Braxton Bynum Lloyd, a Chapel Hill native, practiced medicine in the Chapel Hill community from 1912 until he died at his Carrboro home in 1947. He was mayor of Carrboro in 1920 and 1921 and a longtime director of the Bank of Chapel Hill.

An outbreak of rheumatic fever strikes Chapel Hill school children and adults Five Chapel Hill school children from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, White Cross and Calvander were stricken with rheumatic fever, along with several adults and members of a Black family near Pittsboro. Dr. B. B. Lloyd had seen about a dozen cases in a few weeks, and physicians studying under Dr. M. J. Rosenau took up the cases. People: M. J. Lloyd, physician to Chapel Hill and Carrboro, dies Dr. Braxton Bynum Lloyd, 60, who had practiced medicine around Chapel Hill and Carrboro nearly all his life, died at his home near Carrboro four days after a heart attack. William deB. MacNider's four-page biographical sketch of Braxton Bynum Lloyd (1886-1947), a Carrboro physician, reprinted from the April 1947 issue of Southern Medicine and Surgery, published in Charlotte. MacNider, longtime professor of pharmacology and a dean of the university's medical school, was Lloyd's contemporary; the piece is a brief source on a doctor's practice in Carrboro in the early twentieth century.
