  2. Southern Power Company builds a steam plant on the Eno near University Station

    Construction or physical change · Eno River near University Station, east of Hillsborough

    Duke's Southern Power Company built a coal-fired steam generating plant beside the Eno near University Station, a backup for its hydroelectric stations, with Fiske-Carter Construction Company holding the contract in 1915. By July 1916 the Eno steam plant was sending current as far as Charlotte while flooding shut down the company's river stations. Its power went to Durham's factories, not to Orange County.

  3. The Bivins brothers' tobacco basket factory is running in Hillsboro

    Founding or opening · Occoneechee Street at West Margaret Lane, Hillsborough

    A Hillsboro report called the Bivins brothers' basket factory a new industry doing a thriving business. It wove the large baskets used in tobacco warehouses by machine, one of few such plants in the country.

  4. Fire destroys two store buildings in Hillsborough's business district

    Disaster or outbreak · Business district beside the brick post office building, Hillsborough

    A fire that began behind O. J. and B. B. Forest's general store destroyed that brick store, the frame Spurgeon building next door with Tolar's grocery and Dr. J. S. Spurgeon's dental office, and a storehouse. The brick post office building stopped the fire, which did about $30,000 in damage with little insurance.

  5. Students place the first marker at Governor Thomas Burke's grave

    Naming or commemoration · Thomas Burke grave, Tyaquin, near Hillsborough

    A committee of university summer-school students working with the Boone Trail Highway Association cleared the unmarked grave of Governor Thomas Burke near Hillsborough and set a stone with an iron tablet at its head.

  6. Hillsboro's first public schoolhouse is gone and its lot is set aside for an athletic field

    Closing or ending · West Tryon Street, Hillsborough

    Once the new consolidated school opened, the grounds where the old Hillsboro schoolhouse had stood were to become the new school's athletic field, according to a February 1923 report.

  7. Carrboro's old schoolhouse is moved and split between the Methodist parsonage and church

    Construction or physical change · Carrboro Methodist Church, Carrboro

    The Carrboro school replaced by the new graded school was being moved in March 1923. Part became the Methodist parsonage at 114 West Main Street, which served until the Methodists built a new parsonage on Oak Street in 1955, and part was added to the Methodist church for Sunday school rooms, with John T. Squires as contractor.
