Faculty members start a Sunday school in Person Hall
Members of the faculty, helped by their wives and some students, started a Sunday school that met in Person Hall, then the college chapel. Spencer places it in the decades when the Presbyterian faculty led religious life in the village.

Elisha Mitchell builds the stone wall around the Presbyterian churchyard
Elisha Mitchell gave the stone wall around the churchyard and Cornelia Phillips its stone pillars and gates, among the gifts that fitted out the new church in the year or so after its dedication.

John B. Shearer becomes the first pastor of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church
Faculty members had served the church as unpaid stated supplies until the congregation called John B. Shearer, later president of Davidson College, as its first installed pastor. He stayed until June 1862, when he went back to Virginia.

Charles Phillips serves as stated supply for the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church
Phillips, licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Orange in December 1857, succeeded his father James as stated supply of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church after James died in March 1867, and served until he left for Davidson College in February 1869. He taught and superintended the church Sunday school and with his wife started a Sunday school for Black residents.

Charles Phillips ordains two elders and leaves the emptied Presbyterian church in their care
With the university closed and most of the faculty gone, Charles Phillips ordained Thomas Kirkland and a Mr. Thompson as elders just before he left for Davidson College and put the church in their hands. The Sunday school went on under Thompson, and the presbytery sent a visiting minister now and then.

Daniel J. Currie is ordained and installed as pastor of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church
Daniel J. Currie accepted the call while finishing seminary in Columbia, began work in Chapel Hill in May 1894, was ordained at a called meeting of the presbytery that September and was installed the next day.
