The Junior Service League canvasses the Chapel Hill school district for a census
About 300 volunteers under some 45 captains went house to house through Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the county areas that send children to Chapel Hill High School, in the town's first amateur census. The league of young women ran it under the university's Planning Department, with graduate student Eric Hill as supervisor and Mayor Robert W. Madry chairing the advisory committee.

The census counts 1,432 people in Carrboro
The league's census found 1,432 people in 373 families inside Carrboro's limits, against 1,455 in the 1940 federal census. Of the 1,334 people in non-student families, 1,017 were white and 317 Black.

The census counts 17,472 people in the Chapel Hill school attendance district
Across Chapel Hill, Carrboro, the Chapel Hill suburbs and the county areas that send children to its high school, the census counted 17,472 people in 3,645 families, 7,800 of them in student households. It found 3,458 people under 18 and 3,219 motor vehicles.

The league's census puts Chapel Hill's population at 4,453
Leaving out students and their households, the census counted 3,598 people in Chapel Hill. Adding the 855 people in graduate-student households, whom the 1940 federal census had counted, gave 4,453, up 799 from 3,654 in 1940; with all students the town limits held 9,825 people in 1,451 families.

The school census checks enrollment in the Chapel Hill district's schools
On May 7, 1948 Chapel Hill High School had 295 pupils and Chapel Hill Elementary 432, while the Orange County Training School had 158 in its high school grades and 433 in its elementary grades. The census projected net enrollments for 1948-49 of 271, 415, 127 and 350.
