  1. Revolution and early republic · 1775–1799
  2. The oldest frame section of the Hill Farm house is built on St. Mary's Road

    Construction or physical change · Hill Farm, 4508 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    The earliest part of the Hill Farm house, a frame section on a stone foundation with a double-shouldered chimney nearly eight feet wide, may go back to the 1780s, making it one of the few eighteenth-century buildings along the road.

  4. A saddle-notched log house is built on the Webb Farm on St. Mary's Road

    Construction or physical change · Webb Farm, 3120 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    The Webb Farm's one-room log house, with a fieldstone chimney, dates from the early nineteenth century; a two-story frame house was built across its front late in the century with no inside door between them.

  6. The Jacobs farmhouse is built on St. Mary's Road

    Construction or physical change · Jacobs House, 4416 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    A two-story frame farmhouse of the Triple-A type was built in the 1890s on what the 1999 survey called the Jacobs property, where three barns and a silo also stand.

  8. The George Washington Walker Farm is laid out on St. Mary's Road

    Founding or opening · George Washington Walker Farm, 5018 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    A farm of nearly 75 acres was set up on both sides of St. Mary's Road around 1900, with a one-story house and frame barns that still stand. Its later buildings follow the county's shifts from grain to dairy, poultry and beef.

  9. The Freeland farmhouse and outbuildings are built on St. Mary's Road

    Construction or physical change · Freeland House, 4218 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    A one-and-a-half-story Triple-A farmhouse with a wraparound porch, garages and a tractor shed went up together on a small hill above St. Mary's Road between about 1910 and 1920.

  10. Flat Rock church builds its frame church at St. Mary's and New Sharon Church roads

    Construction or physical change · Flat Rock AME Church, 113 New Sharon Church Road at St. Mary's Road

    Soon after the congregation formed in 1915, members of Flat Rock church built a one-story frame church in a plain Gothic style at the corner of St. Mary's and New Sharon Church roads, the center of one of two Black settlements that grew up along the road after emancipation.

  11. The Bacon farm on St. Mary's Road takes up dairying

    Construction or physical change · Bacon Farm, 4123 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    After the First World War the owners of the Bacon Farm switched to dairying, building a large gambrel-roofed dairy barn and two frame milking parlors behind the house, which was remodeled as a bungalow in the same years.

  12. The Walker farm on St. Mary's Road switches from grain to dairy cattle

    Construction or physical change · George Washington Walker Farm, 5018 St. Mary's Road, east of Hillsborough

    Around 1920 the Walker family gave up grain for dairying and built a large gambrel-roofed dairy barn, milking parlors and feed barns on the St. Mary's Road farm.

  13. The Walker farm builds cinder-block chicken houses

    In the late 1930s the Walker farm moved from dairying to poultry and put up several cinder-block chicken houses in 1938. The farm turned to beef cattle in the 1960s.

  14. St. Mary's Road is paved and straightened

    The old Trading Path route east of Hillsborough, later the Oxford Road, was paved and straightened in sections around 1940, though its side roads stayed dirt.

  16. A county survey proposes a St. Mary's Road rural historic district

    Publication, speech or performance · St. Mary's Road (SR 1002), east of Hillsborough

    With a state Certified Local Government grant won in late 1998, Orange County hired GAI Consultants to survey six miles of St. Mary's Road from US 70 to the Durham line. Its August 1999 report recorded 20 historic places and recommended a rural historic district along the old Trading Path route.
