  2. Founding or opening · Bethlehem Presbyterian Church Bethlehem Presbyterian Church is organized

    Elisha Mitchell, Elijah Graves and Samuel Child led the organization of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, which built its first church the next year.

  3. Founding or opening · The Oaks, Orange County William James Bingham opens his school at the Oaks

    William James Bingham gave up Hillsborough Academy after its spring 1844 session and in May announced a select classical and mathematical school twelve miles southwest of Hillsborough, to open that November on the Oaks tract he bought the same year. It became known as the Bingham School and stayed at the Oaks until December 1864.

  4. Appointment, election or service · Orange County, the Oaks Robert Bingham becomes a partner in his father's school at the Oaks

    After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1857, Robert Bingham was admitted in July as junior partner in his father's school at the Oaks, which took the firm name W. J. Bingham and Sons. His brother William was also a partner.

  5. Founding or opening · The Oaks, Orange County William Bingham takes over the family school at the Oaks and incorporates it

    With his brother Robert in the army and his father in declining health, William Bingham was running the school at the Oaks by 1864. That year he incorporated it as the Bingham School, a military and classical academy, and in December moved it to Mebaneville.

  6. Construction or physical change · Mebane, Orange County Bingham School moves from the Oaks to Mebaneville

    William Bingham and Robert Bingham, sons of William James Bingham, moved the school that December to a site east of Mebane's Station on the North Carolina Railroad, after the legislature incorporated it in 1864 as a military and classical academy. The highway marker's 1865 may be when classes began at the new site.

  8. Property or economic transaction · Oaks J. Morrow and Sons grind flour and corn at Oaks

    In the late 1860s and early 1870s J. Morrow and his sons ran a flour and corn mill at Oaks, where a dry goods store and a tannery also operated in the community that had grown up around the Bingham school.

  10. Founding or opening · Oaks The Orange County Red Cross accepts a branch at Oaks

    On May 11, 1918, the chapter's executive committee read and accepted the Oaks community's petition to join as a branch. Oaks joined Cedar Grove and New Hope as branches of the Hillsborough chapter.

  11. Construction or physical change · Oaks Bethlehem Presbyterian Church builds a Classical Revival church at Oaks

    In 1922 the Bethlehem Presbyterian congregation at Oaks built a church fronted by a tall portico on square columns, with dentils along the eaves and large nine-over-nine windows. The congregation dates from early in the nineteenth century, and the form says its church has been replaced at least three times.

  13. Naming or commemoration · Bingham School, the Oaks, southwestern Orange County The Bingham School site at the Oaks joins the Study List

    The National Register Advisory Committee placed the site of the Bingham School at the Oaks on North Carolina's Study List, its list of properties likely to qualify for the National Register. It went on the list for further study, pending an architectural assessment.

  14. Award or honor · rural Orange County The Bingham School site is listed in the National Register

    The Bingham School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, one of six rural Orange County listings the 1993 county survey recorded.
