The 1989 measles outbreak at UNC

In February 1989, after outbreaks elsewhere in the state, health officials confirmed a measles case in a UNC student and ordered vaccinations for those without enough protection. Over four days thousands were vaccinated at Woollen Gym, and about 1,000 students who were not were barred from classes and residence halls under a county quarantine, which was lifted on February 16.

After measles outbreaks in surrounding counties, North Carolina Memorial Hospital began mandatory vaccinations in early February 1989 for about 1,000 employees born between 1957 and 1968, to keep the disease from reaching patients if a case appeared in Orange County. On February 3 state and county health officials confirmed a case in a UNC student living on campus, the only one reported in the county, after outbreaks across the state and cases at N.C. State and Duke. They ordered the vaccination of students, faculty and staff whose records showed too little protection. From February 6 to 9 the Orange County Health Department and Student Health Service vaccinated about 2,500 to 3,000 people a day at Woollen Gym, working down a list of 9,956 students, plus faculty and staff, who needed new shots, with Alpha Phi Omega and other student volunteers helping. By the close on February 9 about 1,000 students were still unvaccinated; under a county quarantine order they were barred from classes and residence halls until they could show immunity. The health department lifted the quarantine on February 16, about two weeks after the first case was reported, and those who had been sent off campus were allowed back to class on February 17.
